Mercury's Retrograde Through Virgo: Day 1 Reflections

Though the exact station occurs this afternoon, I am feeling the pull to slooooow down. As part of my process, I am sharing daily writings and reflections with you.

I woke up wide awake at 3:18 am. I was dreaming about my grandma’s cucumber salad. I know my sister makes this recipe. I have never made it or even desired to make it, but I was quite fixated on doing so in my dream.

Every year, Mercury goes retrograde 3 times for 3 weeks. For each of these retrograde journeys, Mercury travels through signs of the same element. This year, Mercury retrogrades through the earth signs.

In my particular astrology chart, the earth signs activate houses linked to legacy. I appreciate that I just learned about this yesterday, and then I dreamt of my late Grandma’s recipe.

I had a hard time falling back asleep, which was strange because I had taken magnesium before bed, lifted weights, and was quite sleepy. I appreciated the unusualness, as this is a theme of retrogrades. Something normal becomes abnormal. Something wrong becomes right. Reversals occur.

As I was busy with the kids and making breakfast, I broke an egg on my bathrobe. Mercury’s first reminder to move more slowly.

When Mercury is retrograde, s/he is as close to our Earth as s/he gets. According to Rick Levine, this can amplify the Mercurial energies, which may help us understand why people struggle with retrograde energies. It’s not that the planet is ‘weakened’, but rather the planet is so strong and loud we are called to work with the energies very consciously.

I was fortunate to run into one of my favourite Virgo rising women as I was headed to work at a cafe this morning.

So far, I have not checked social media. I got straight to work, and that feels good.

I love that Mercury is stationing retrograde as the Sun enters Virgo (a Mercury-ruled sign) on a Wednesday (Mercury-ruled day).

In our modern world, Mercury gets assigned to commerce, markets, the mind, communications, and messages. Traditionally, Mercury also rules over dreams, the travel of the soul, alchemy (weaving the above and below), and magick. I hope these spiritual and soulful themes will arise and reveal themselves to me and you more clearly and mystically during this retrograde descent.

Stay tuned for Mercury knowledge, updates, and reflections.
